What's happening
This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to designate May 2018 as Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month in New York State.
Why it matters
Raises visibility for ongoing public health concerns. By officially recognizing Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, the state highlights the continued importance of addressing teen pregnancy, signaling to policymakers, communities, and educators that this remains a priority issue.
Acknowledges progress while underscoring persistent disparities. The resolution notes that while teen birth rates have dropped nationwide and across all demographic groups, disparities still exist—emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and equity-focused strategies.
Encourages coordinated action at multiple levels. The call for increased activity at local, state, and national levels suggests that teen pregnancy prevention requires a comprehensive approach, involving not just government but also schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations.
Aligns state efforts with national initiatives. By connecting New York’s observance with National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, the resolution promotes consistency in messaging and may facilitate access to federal resources, campaigns, and best practices.
