What's happening
This resolution urges the Governor to designate February 14, 2017 as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day in New York.
Why it matters
Raises awareness of a widespread but often overlooked health issue. By urging official recognition, the resolution spotlights congenital heart defects (CHD), which are among the most common birth defects and a leading cause of defect-related deaths in children.
Encourages early detection and intervention. Increased public awareness can lead to earlier diagnoses and interventions, which are critical for improving health outcomes and survival rates for affected children.
Highlights funding and research gaps. The resolution draws attention to the limited resources currently allocated for CHD education, research, and support, potentially motivating policymakers and the public to advocate for greater investment.
Supports affected families and communities. Recognizing CHD Awareness Day can foster community support and reduce isolation for the approximately 1.8 million families in the U.S. living with the impact of CHD, while also emphasizing the importance of protecting children’s health at the state and national levels.
