What's happening

This resolution posthumously honors Michael A. Valente with the New York State Senate Liberty Medal for his heroic military service.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the enduring impact of immigrant contributions. Michael A. Valente, an Italian immigrant, is recognized as the only Italian American to receive the Medal of Honor during World War I, emphasizing the significant role immigrants have played in U.S. history and military service.

  2. Underscores the importance of commemorating local heroes. The resolution not only honors Valente’s bravery but also reinforces community identity by noting local memorials, such as the naming of a bridge, city signs, and an annual day in his memory, which help keep his story alive for future generations.

  3. Reinforces public recognition of military service. By awarding the state’s highest civilian honor posthumously, the resolution serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and encourages ongoing gratitude and recognition for those who serve in the armed forces.

  4. Links individual valor to broader civic values. Valente’s actions are framed as exemplary of patriotism and dedication, connecting his heroism to ideals the state wishes to promote, such as courage, selflessness, and commitment to community and country.
