What's happening

This resolution honors the University at Albany for receiving the 2016 Outstanding Community Partner Award from the Food Pantries for the Capital District.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the University at Albany’s direct impact on fighting hunger. by supporting initiatives like the Filling the Gap: Food Pantry System, the university plays a tangible role in helping local families secure nutritious food, which addresses a critical need for thousands in the Capital District.

  2. Recognizes the university’s broader community engagement. the resolution underscores collaborative efforts from multiple university departments (School of Public Health, School of Social Welfare, Rockefeller College, Alumni Association), showing that community partnership is woven into the institution’s culture, not just isolated to a single department.

  3. Elevates the importance of data-driven approaches to social issues. by assisting with the Community Needs Assessment project, the university enables more targeted and effective responses to food insecurity, demonstrating how academic resources can support and strengthen local nonprofits’ work.

  4. Sets a precedent for public acknowledgment of academic-community partnerships. this recognition may encourage other universities to invest in similar collaborations, amplifying the role of higher education institutions in addressing regional challenges like hunger and poverty.
