What's happening

This resolution honors Major Francis S. Coots for his 33 years of dedicated service to the New York State Police upon his retirement.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the significance of long-term public service. By recognizing Major Coots’ 33-year career, the resolution underscores the value placed on career law enforcement professionals and the impact of their steady leadership on community safety and trust.

  2. Emphasizes leadership in regional policing. Major Coots commanded a large and diverse area—seven counties covering 167 towns, 89 villages, and five cities—demonstrating the complexity and scale of responsibility within state police leadership roles.

  3. Acknowledges the ripple effect of public service on families and communities. The resolution not only honors Major Coots but also his family, reflecting how public service often involves the support and sacrifice of loved ones and can inspire broader community respect.

  4. Draws attention to transitions between public service roles. By noting Major Coots' move to a campus safety leadership position after retirement, it highlights how experienced law enforcement officers continue to contribute to public safety in new contexts, such as higher education.
