What's happening

This resolution commends Vera House for its 23rd Annual White Ribbon Campaign raising awareness about domestic and sexual violence.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the importance of community-led efforts. The resolution recognizes Vera House’s White Ribbon Campaign as a significant initiative that mobilizes thousands of Central New Yorkers to publicly oppose domestic and sexual violence, emphasizing the role of grassroots action in addressing societal problems.

  2. Underscores the role of men as allies. By noting that the campaign is led by men and encourages all community members to participate, the resolution calls attention to the importance of male engagement in preventing violence and challenging harmful norms.

  3. Draws attention to comprehensive support services. The resolution details Vera House’s broad range of services—including emergency shelter, education, counseling, and coalition-building—highlighting the organization’s holistic approach to supporting survivors and addressing the root causes of violence.

  4. Promotes education and sustained awareness. The mention of events like the Education Challenge and community gatherings signals a focus on long-term cultural change, not just short-term awareness, reinforcing the need for ongoing education in schools and the wider community.
