What's happening

This resolution honors Jane Schreibman with the New York State Senate Liberty Medal for her heroic actions during a 2016 bombing incident.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the vital role of alert, engaged citizens. Schreibman’s actions show how individuals can make a direct difference in public safety during emergencies, underscoring the importance of community vigilance.

  2. Emphasizes recognition of civilian heroism. The Liberty Medal is the Senate’s highest honor, so this resolution publicly elevates and celebrates acts of courage by everyday people, not just professionals.

  3. Draws attention to the broader impact of quick action. By intervening, Schreibman arguably prevented further injuries or loss of life, demonstrating how split-second decisions can have far-reaching consequences for many.

  4. Reinforces community values. The resolution frames Schreibman’s behavior as embodying the collective spirit and compassion of New Yorkers, encouraging others to act selflessly in times of crisis.
