What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim May 5-12, 2018, as Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Raises visibility for a rare genetic disorder. Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), or "brittle bone disease," often goes unrecognized due to its rarity; designating an awareness week can help educate the public, teachers, and healthcare providers about the challenges faced by those living with OI.

  2. Supports advocacy for research and better treatments. By officially recognizing OI Awareness Week, the resolution aims to draw attention to the need for increased funding and research, potentially leading to advancements in care and quality of life for individuals affected by OI.

  3. Encourages community and government support. The resolution specifically urges support for the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation and similar organizations, which play crucial roles in providing resources, advocating for patients, and fostering a supportive community for individuals and families managing this lifelong disorder.
