What's happening

This resolution honors the Jewish Association Serving the Aging for 50 years of service to older adults in New York.

Why it matters

  1. JASA’s services directly support older adults’ ability to “age in place,”. which is the strong preference of most seniors. This means more elderly New Yorkers can remain in their homes and communities, preserving their independence and neighborhood ties.

  2. The organization provides a comprehensive safety net, especially for vulnerable populations. With programs in multiple languages, delivery of 1.25 million meals annually, affordable housing for thousands, and legal/mental health support, JASA addresses the multidimensional needs of seniors—especially those with lower incomes or limited family support.

  3. JASA’s impact extends beyond the Jewish community,. serving people of all backgrounds and helping to maintain the diversity and continuity of New York’s neighborhoods as they change. This inclusivity helps bridge generational and cultural gaps, strengthening community resilience.

  4. Recognizing JASA highlights the importance of local institutions amid rapid urban change and uncertainty. By honoring JASA’s role, the legislature underscores the value of organizations that anchor and uplift long-term residents, ensuring social stability as the city evolves.

2,500 older adults; and WHEREAS, Older New Yorkers are the bedrock of the communities they inhabit, often serving as a bridge between one generation and the next in a particular community; JASA helps ensure that so many of these New Yorkers are able to remain in their neighborhoods as they age; and WHEREAS, With so much uncertainty, politically and socially, the safety net JASA is able to offer, particularly to lower-income seniors, is often the difference between aging happily in place along with supportive community members and aging elsewhere; and WHEREAS, Neighborhoods and communities across New York City are transforming with incredible pace; and while change is often positive, we must preserve the neighborhood institutions that help support those who have lived here the longest; and WHEREAS, This significant milestone is an excellent opportunity to recognize the special contributions of JASA and the dedicated individuals who strive to better the quality of life for citizens in their community; and RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commend the Jewish Association Serving the Aging for 50 years of dedicated service to the community, and to wish them the best of good fortune in the years to come; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the Jewish Association Serving the Aging.
