This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim January 10, 2017, as Canada Day in New York to recognize close economic and cultural ties.
Why it matters
Recognizing Economic Interdependence. The resolution underscores how deeply New York's economy is intertwined with Canada—highlighting billions in exports, integrated supply chains (like auto parts), and mutual reliance on each other's markets and resources. This affects jobs, business opportunities, and the overall economic health of the state.
Highlighting Border Collaboration and Security. By referencing border crossings and joint military initiatives such as the Eastern Air Defense Sector, the resolution spotlights the importance of cross-border cooperation for both security and the smooth flow of commerce and people.
Emphasizing Cultural and Social Ties. With millions of Canadians visiting New York each year and many New Yorkers having familial or cultural connections to Canada, the resolution recognizes the social fabric and shared heritage that bind the two regions together.
Marking Historical Milestones. By connecting the proclamation to the 150th anniversary of Canadian confederation, the resolution situates New York’s relationship with Canada in a broader historical context, reinforcing the value of international friendships and mutual recognition.
