What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to proclaim March 8, 2017, as Women's Day in New York, aligning with International Women's Day.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights persistent gender inequality and human rights concerns. The resolution emphasizes ongoing issues such as discrimination, domestic violence, and economic disparities affecting women, reminding readers that these are not just historical but current challenges.

  2. Connects New York’s history to global women’s movements. By referencing key events like the Seneca Falls Convention, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, and the achievements of prominent New York women, the resolution positions the state as a foundational leader in the fight for women’s rights, both nationally and internationally.

  3. Recognizes the role of ordinary and extraordinary women in progress. The measure underscores that progress in women’s rights has been driven by the courage and determination of everyday women, as well as political leaders, reinforcing the importance of continued activism and representation.

  4. Calls for both celebration and renewed action. While acknowledging advancements, the resolution also serves as a call to action, urging reflection on areas where women’s lives can be further improved, and aligning New York with the spirit of International Women’s Day: not just celebration, but advocacy and change.
