What's happening

This resolution commemorates the 150th anniversary of the City of Binghamton, recognizing its historical and ongoing significance in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights Binghamton’s role as an economic and industrial hub. The resolution details Binghamton’s transformation from a settlement at a river confluence into a major manufacturing center, notably in cigars, shoes, and later, technology and defense, emphasizing its influence on regional and even national economies.

  2. Acknowledges Binghamton’s impact on American innovation. The city’s legacy includes the origins of IBM and the invention of the flight simulator by Edwin Link, both of which had far-reaching consequences for technology, business, and aerospace training worldwide.

  3. Recognizes the city’s diverse cultural heritage. The resolution notes the waves of immigrants who contributed to Binghamton’s growth and character, underlining the city’s multicultural foundation and ongoing social richness.

  4. Underscores the city’s ongoing significance. By commemorating the 150th anniversary, the resolution not only honors the past but also reaffirms Binghamton’s continuing role in providing quality of life, business opportunity, and educational resources for both the region and New York State.
