What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim May 6-13, 2017, as Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Draws attention to a rare genetic disorder. By urging a formal awareness week, the resolution spotlights Osteogenesis Imperfecta, which is often misunderstood or overlooked, potentially leading to greater empathy and understanding for those affected.

  2. Encourages public and governmental support for research and education. Emphasizes the need for more funding and educational efforts, which could influence future state or private investments in medical research and support services.

  3. Aligns state action with national health initiatives. The resolution’s timing alongside National Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week strengthens New York’s participation in broader advocacy efforts, potentially increasing the visibility and impact of these campaigns.

  4. Signals legislative recognition of rare disease communities. By formally considering the needs of people with OI and their families, the state legislature demonstrates a commitment to inclusive health policy and support for vulnerable populations.
