The resolution urges Governor Cuomo to proclaim May 7-13, 2017, as Hurricane Preparedness Week in New York State.
Why it matters
Highlights the vulnerability of New York’s coastline. The resolution stresses that New York’s 127 miles of Atlantic coastline are at significant risk during hurricane season, especially in late summer and fall, underscoring the need for heightened awareness and preparedness in these regions.
Draws attention to recent devastating hurricanes. By referencing the major financial and human tolls of Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, the resolution reminds the public and policymakers of the real and recent dangers posed by hurricanes, reinforcing the urgency for preparedness.
Emphasizes the importance of public education and planning. The resolution calls for improved public education about hurricane dangers (like high winds, storm surge, and flooding) and acknowledges the joint efforts of public and private entities in developing emergency response plans, highlighting the collective responsibility in disaster readiness.
Connects state action to national efforts. By aligning New York’s recognition of Hurricane Preparedness Week with the National Weather Service’s observance, the resolution aims to amplify awareness and preparedness at both the state and national levels, potentially increasing the effectiveness of outreach and education initiatives.
