What's happening
This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to declare May 14-20, 2017, as Prevention Week in New York to raise awareness about substance abuse, problem gambling, and mental health issues.
Why it matters
Highlights the interconnectedness of substance abuse, problem gambling, and mental health. By urging recognition of these issues together, the resolution underscores the complex, overlapping nature of behavioral health challenges, potentially encouraging more holistic prevention strategies.
Promotes community and school involvement. The resolution specifically encourages schools and local communities to participate in prevention activities, which could foster early intervention and education for young people—a crucial demographic for prevention efforts.
Recognizes and supports prevention providers. By acknowledging the work of prevention organizations and state agencies, the resolution could help validate and strengthen their roles, potentially leading to increased resources or support for their initiatives.
Leverages state resources and campaigns. The text draws attention to existing state-run initiatives like Talk2Prevent and Combat Heroin, which may help amplify their reach and effectiveness through statewide recognition and public engagement.
