What's happening
This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to declare July 2017 as Fibroid Awareness Month in New York to promote awareness and education about uterine fibroids.
Why it matters
Highlights a significant public health and economic issue. Uterine fibroids are extremely common and the leading reason for hysterectomies, representing a major health burden for women and a substantial economic cost, with billions spent annually on care and lost productivity.
Addresses health disparities. The resolution underscores that African American women are disproportionately affected by fibroids—at three to five times the rate of the general population—pointing to the need for targeted awareness and interventions to address systemic health inequities.
Promotes education and early intervention. By urging the creation of seminars, funding, medical panels, and community programs, the resolution aims to improve early diagnosis, educate the public, and expand research and treatment options, which could ultimately reduce the prevalence and severity of the disease.
Supports long-term change. Raising awareness through a dedicated month could catalyze ongoing advocacy, research funding, and policy initiatives, building momentum toward better treatments and, potentially, a cure.
