What's happening

This resolution celebrates the 30th anniversary of Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, recognizing its impact on at-risk youth in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the impact of long-term, individualized mentoring. The resolution recognizes Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection’s model of pairing at-risk youth with dedicated Youth Advocates who support students both academically and personally through graduation and beyond, addressing a wide range of barriers to success.

  2. Emphasizes the importance of community partnerships and holistic support. The program collaborates with families, schools, employers, and community organizations to provide not just academic support, but also job readiness training, enrichment activities, and social-emotional development, reflecting a comprehensive approach to youth empowerment.

  3. Spotlights effective prevention strategies for dropout and risk behaviors. By implementing evidence-based programs like the Teen Outreach Program (TOP) and requiring community service, Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection tackles issues such as school dropout, suspensions, and teen pregnancy, promoting responsible citizenship and future readiness.

  4. Demonstrates the role of sustained investment in local outcomes. The resolution underscores the positive, long-term change made possible by consistent support from partners like Wegmans and Hillside Family of Agencies, illustrating how collaborative, sustained investment can drive measurable improvements in graduation rates and workforce readiness among vulnerable youth.
