What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim March 24, 2018, 8:30-9:30pm as Earth Hour in New York State to support environmental awareness.

Why it matters

  1. Symbolic Participation in Global Movement. By encouraging New York to join cities worldwide in Earth Hour, the resolution aims to strengthen the sense of global solidarity in addressing climate change, showing that local actions contribute to a larger, international effort.

  2. Raising Public Awareness. The resolution highlights the importance of increasing public understanding of environmental issues, using Earth Hour as a tool to educate and inspire citizens about their role in protecting natural resources and reducing carbon emissions.

  3. Visibility and Influence. Involving iconic New York landmarks (like the Empire State Building and Niagara Falls) is intended to create a powerful visual statement, potentially motivating both residents and observers elsewhere to take environmental action.

  4. Catalyst for Further Action. While acknowledging that Earth Hour alone won’t solve climate change, the resolution positions this event as a starting point to galvanize broader support and momentum for more substantive environmental initiatives in the state.
