Title of bill
An act to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to school bus parking on city streets
Purpose
Regulates the parking of school buses operated by or pursuant to a contract with the board of education.
Summary of provisions
Section 1. The administrative code of the city of New York is amended by adding a new section 19-608 to read as follows: 3 § 19-608 School bus parking on a city street. No school bus operated by or pursuant to a contract with the board of education shall: (a)park on a city street on weekdays between the hours of five p.m. and five a.m., or park on a city street on weekends between the hours of five p.m. on Friday and five a.m. on Monday.
Existing law
New
Justification
In some areas it has become exceedingly difficult for home owners/tenants to find parking on residential streets because these spots are occupied by school buses. Oversized/commercial vehicles occupy spaces that should be available to residents. It is the duty of school bus companies operating by or pursuant to a contract with the board of education to provide appropriate parking for their vehicles. While it may be convenient for school bus drivers to park school buses on streets outside or close to their residence this practice creates undue hardships for others.
