What's happening
This bill allows New York taxpayers to deduct adoption-related expenses, including agency, medical, legal, and court fees, from their personal gross income.
Why it matters
Reduces the financial burden of adoption. By allowing a deduction for a broad range of adoption expenses, the bill could make adoption more affordable for New York families, potentially encouraging more people to consider adopting.
Covers a wide range of costs. The deduction is not limited to agency fees but also includes medical, legal, and court costs, as well as any other related expenses, providing comprehensive financial relief for adoptive parents.
Applies immediately and broadly. The benefit takes effect for all tax years starting after the bill becomes law, offering timely support for families currently in or soon entering the adoption process.
May help children find families faster. By lessening economic barriers, the bill could increase the number of prospective adoptive parents, which may help more children in need of homes find permanent families sooner.
