What's happening
This bill extends Schenectady County's authority to impose an extra 0.5% sales tax until November 30, 2019.
Why it matters
Continues extra local revenue for two more years. By extending the authorization for Schenectady County to collect an additional 0.5% sales tax, the bill allows the county to maintain a higher level of local revenue, which can help fund county operations, public services, and infrastructure projects without relying solely on state aid or property taxes.
Impacts local consumer costs. Residents and shoppers in Schenectady County will continue to pay a slightly higher sales tax rate, affecting the total cost of goods and services purchased in the county. This could influence consumer spending patterns or decisions about where to shop, especially for larger purchases.
Reflects ongoing fiscal needs at the county level. The repeated renewal of this tax authorization highlights that Schenectady County still faces fiscal pressures, and local leaders believe the extra tax is necessary to balance budgets or avoid cuts to services. The extension also gives the county more time to plan for long-term fiscal stability.

Title of bill
An act to amend the tax law, in relation to the imposition of sales and compensating use tax in Schenectady county
Purpose
To extend, for another two years, the authority of Schenectady County to impose an additional sales and use tax of one-half of one percent.
Summary of provisions
Section 1210 of the Tax Law is amended to extend, until November 30, 2019, the authority of Schenectady County to impose a sales and use tax which is one-half of one percent additional to the three percent rate that is generally authorized by state law.
Existing law
Section 1210 of the Tax Law currently authorizes Schenectady County to impose the additional one-half of one percent sales and use tax until November 30, 2017.
Justification
In 2003, the Schenectady County Legislature requested legislation to impose an additional one-half percent sales tax in order to help address its financial needs and diversify its revenue sources. This authority was initially granted for two years. It has been renewed every two years since then. These sales tax revenues are a necessary part of the County's financial plan, and this bill would extend, for another two years, the authority of Schenectady County to impose this additional sales tax.
Fiscal implications
None to the State.
Local fiscal implications
This bill will maintain the current level of local sales tax revenue received by Schenectady County.
Effective date
Immediate.
