What's happening
This bill extends Delaware County's authority to impose an additional 1% sales and use tax through November 30, 2019.
Why it matters
Continued Local Revenue. By extending the authority to impose the extra 1% sales tax, Delaware County can maintain a significant source of revenue that supports essential county programs, infrastructure, and services without relying solely on property taxes or state aid.
Budget Planning Stability. The extension provides Delaware County officials with more certainty in their budgeting process, allowing for better planning and potentially avoiding sudden cuts to public services or emergency tax hikes.
Impact on Residents and Businesses. Local consumers and businesses will continue to pay a higher sales tax rate compared to counties without the additional 1%, potentially affecting purchasing decisions and the overall cost of living in the county.
Precedent for Other Counties. The recurring renewal of this authority reflects a broader trend in New York State, where counties seek legislative approval to temporarily raise local sales taxes to address fiscal needs, potentially influencing future tax policy debates statewide.
