What's happening
This bill extends Broome County's authority to impose an additional 1% sales tax through November 30, 2019.
Why it matters
Continued Local Revenue for Services. Extending the extra 1% sales tax allows Broome County to maintain or expand funding for essential local services such as public safety, infrastructure, and social programs without needing to cut budgets or find alternative revenue sources.
Delay in Tax Relief. Residents and shoppers in Broome County will continue to pay a higher sales tax rate for at least two more years, which could impact household budgets and consumer spending, especially for lower-income families.
Budget Planning Certainty. The extension provides Broome County officials with greater financial predictability, allowing for more stable long-term planning and the ability to commit to multi-year projects or obligations.
Regional Economic Impact. By keeping the sales tax rate higher than some neighboring counties, Broome might influence shopping patterns or business decisions, potentially affecting local retailers and cross-border commerce.
