What's happening
This bill extends Yates County's authority to impose an additional 1% sales tax from 2017 to 2019.
Why it matters
Continued Funding for Local Services. Extending the additional 1% sales tax allows Yates County to maintain or potentially expand funding for essential county services, such as roads, public safety, and social programs, without needing to raise property taxes or cut services.
Budget Stability and Planning. The extension provides county officials with a more stable and predictable revenue stream, enabling better long-term financial planning and potentially reducing fiscal uncertainty for local government operations.
Impact on Residents and Visitors. The additional sales tax affects not only residents but also tourists and shoppers from outside the county, helping to broaden the tax base and spread the financial responsibility for public services.
Precedent for Other Counties. The bill is part of a common legislative practice in New York where counties seek periodic renewals of temporary sales tax increases; how this extension is handled could influence similar requests from other counties facing comparable budget pressures.

Title of bill
An act to amend the tax law, in relation to extending the authorization of the county of Yates to impose an additional one percent of sales and compensating use taxes
Purpose
To authorize the Yates County Legislature to extend their additional 1% sales tax for a 2 year period.
Summary of provisions
The bill amends section 1210 of the tax law to authorize Yates County to impose an additional 1% sales tax ending November 30, 2019.
Justification
The Yates County Legislature has passed a resolution requesting that the New York State Legislature introduce and pass a bill to authorize the county to extend their existing additional 1% sales and use tax. The County has determined that the continuation of the additional 1% increase in the sales tax is the preferred method of raising revenue to help offset the impact of the property tax burden upon residents.
