What's happening
This bill extends Wayne County's authority to impose an additional one percent sales tax through November 30, 2019.
Why it matters
Continues crucial local revenue. By extending Wayne County’s authority to impose the extra 1% sales tax, the bill ensures the county can continue to fund essential public services and infrastructure projects that rely on this revenue.
Affects local businesses and consumers. The extension means that both residents and visitors will continue paying a higher sales tax rate in Wayne County, impacting the cost of goods and possibly influencing shopping choices.
Precedent for similar tax extensions. Wayne County’s continued use of this temporary tax may encourage other counties in New York to seek similar extensions, shaping statewide policy on local taxation and fiscal autonomy.
