What's happening
This bill designates certain public safety employees in the town of Brookhaven as peace officers, with firearm restrictions.
Why it matters
Expands legal authority for specific Brookhaven public safety officials. by granting peace officer status, which includes powers such as making arrests, issuing summonses, and conducting certain investigations, thereby potentially affecting how public safety is enforced in the town.
Limits firearm possession to those with proper licenses. , meaning these newly designated peace officers cannot automatically carry firearms as part of their role—addressing concerns about increased arming of municipal employees and emphasizing oversight and training.
Directly impacts oversight and accountability. for public safety leadership in Brookhaven, as those holding commissioner and director positions will now be subject to peace officer regulations and obligations, potentially affecting hiring practices, training requirements, and liability standards.
Could influence relationships and coordination with police and other law enforcement agencies. , since peace officer status often involves specific legal powers and responsibilities that differ from both ordinary public employees and fully sworn police officers.
