What's happening
This bill makes certain state-owned reforestation lands subject to all property taxes, including county taxes.
Why it matters
Local governments and school districts could see increased revenue. from property taxes on state-owned reforestation lands, potentially easing budget constraints or reducing the reliance on other funding sources.
The state government would face higher annual costs. due to the new obligation to pay full property taxes—including county taxes—on lands previously exempt, which could impact funding for other state programs or services.
Counties and taxpayers may experience shifts in tax burdens. , as counties would now receive tax payments from the state for these lands, potentially reducing pressure on local property owners.
The bill could influence future state land acquisitions. for reforestation, since the added tax expense might make the state more cautious about purchasing additional land for environmental conservation.
