AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Westchester County Purple Heart Highway"
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:
Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-h to read as follows:
§ 344-h. Portion of the state highway system to be designated as the "Westchester County Purple Heart Highway". All that portion of the state highway system constituting the Saw Mill river parkway in the county of Westchester, beginning at exit thirty-nine of such parkway in the town of Bedford, continuing in a generally southwesterly direction on the Saw Mill river parkway, and terminating at exit twenty-three of such parkway in the town of Greenburgh, shall be designated and known as the "Westchester County Purple Heart Highway".
§ 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the designation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be of one ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act.
§ 3. This act shall take effect immediately.

Summary of provisions
Section one amends the Highway Law by adding a new section 344-h to designate a portion of the Saw Mill River Parkway, in the county of Westchester, as the "Westchester County Purple Heart Highway." This designated portion shall constitute the roadway extending from exit thirty-nine in the town of Bedford to exit twenty-three in the town of Greenburgh.
Section two of this bill provides that the commissioner of the Depart- ment of Transportation shall provide for the installation and mainte- nance of adequate signage for the designated portion of the state high- way system stated in Section one.
Section three establishes the effective date.
Justification
To bring further recognition to the Westchester County Veterans who, in the service of their community and country, made extraordinary personal sacrifices thereby ensuring the freedoms that we currently enjoy. In comparison, the dedication of a State highway is but a small thing; nevertheless, it is incumbent upon us to memorialize and honor the service-members wounded or killed while in the service of the Armed Forces to ensure our personal and historic memories grant these heroes the honors they so richly deserve.
