What's happening
This bill changes New York's fall primary election day from the first Tuesday to the first Thursday after the second Monday in September for 2018.
Why it matters
Adjusts Election Logistics for 2018. Changing the primary date to a Thursday instead of a Tuesday could affect voter turnout and poll worker availability, since voters and election officials may be accustomed to the traditional Tuesday schedule.
Temporary Change with Repeal Clause. The bill is designed as a one-time adjustment, only applying for 2018, which signals a response to a specific scheduling or legal conflict that year, rather than a permanent shift in election policy.
Impacts Campaign Strategies and Voter Outreach. Candidates, political parties, and advocacy groups will need to alter their get-out-the-vote operations and communications to ensure voters are aware of the unusual Thursday primary, potentially influencing who participates in the election.
