Title of bill
An act to amend the executive law, in relation to designating Oceola Lake and lake Mohegan as inland waterways for purposes of waterfront revitalization
Purpose
Designates Oceola lake and lake Mohegan as inland waterways for the purposes of waterfront revitalization
Summary of provisions
Section one of the bill adds Oceola lake and lake Mohegan as inland waterways to the list of inland waterways.
Section two of the bill provides the effective date.
Justification
With multiple harmful algal blooms, a spot on the State's 303(d) impair- ment list, and a classification as priority impaired, Mohegan Lake, a beautiful lake front community in Westchester County, faces myriad chal- lenges relating to water quality and eutrophication. As a function of drainage, interconnectivity means that the threats this lake faces and those lakes in the surrounding Peekskill Hollow Brook watershed can directly impact New York City's drinking water supply.
By adding these lakes to the list of inland waterways, municipalities can align their use with the State's Coastal and Inland Waterway Poli- cies, and will be able to pursue our shared goals of improved water quality, preservation of open space and wildlife habitat, promotion of tourism and economic development opportunities, as well as combating the aforementioned threats to the Peekskill Hollow Creek Watershed.
