What's happening
This bill allows Farmingdale to apply for retroactive property tax exemption for certain parcels for specific past tax years.
Why it matters
Potential local government budget impact. If the exemption and refunds are granted, the Village of Farmingdale could recover property taxes it previously paid, affecting both its finances and the revenue of Nassau County and local school districts for the specified years.
Precedent for retroactive tax relief. Passing this bill may set an example for other municipalities seeking similar retroactive exemptions, which could lead to more requests for legislative intervention in property tax matters.
Administrative discretion and flexibility. The bill gives the Nassau County legislature and relevant tax authorities significant discretion to grant the exemption and issue refunds, which could influence future administrative responses to late or missed exemption applications.

If such exemption is granted and such municipality, therefore, shall have paid any tax with respect to the subject rolls, the applicable governing body or tax department may, in its sole discretion, provide for the refund of those taxes paid and cancel those taxes, fines, penalties, liens or interest remaining unpaid.
