What's happening

This bill establishes the Town of Southampton Community Development Agency to oversee community development within the town’s limits.

Why it matters

  1. Centralizes community development powers. The new agency will have authority over all community development activities within Southampton, streamlining decision-making and potentially accelerating projects that address local needs.

  2. Subject to existing municipal planning safeguards. The agency must follow local zoning, planning regulations, and comprehensive land use plans, which helps ensure that development aligns with community priorities and environmental considerations.

  3. Governed by elected town officials. The agency’s board will be composed entirely of the town supervisor and town council members, making its leadership directly accountable to Southampton residents and reflecting local political priorities.

  4. Limits acquisition powers to town boundaries. By restricting the agency’s ability to acquire land (through purchase or eminent domain) to within Southampton’s borders, the bill prevents expansion beyond the town and focuses resources on local issues.
