What's happening

This bill directs the education commissioner to ignore attendance-related aid reductions for Fallsburg central school district for the 2016–2017 year.

Why it matters

  1. Prevents financial penalties for Fallsburg schools. By instructing the education commissioner to ignore the usual attendance rule, this bill ensures Fallsburg central school district receives its full state aid, despite falling one day short of the required 180 days of instruction in 2016–2017.

  2. Supports local budgeting and educational stability. Without the threat of losing state funds, the school district can avoid sudden budget shortfalls, which could otherwise affect programs, staffing, or services for students.

  3. Sets a possible precedent for future attendance exceptions. Granting this exception could influence how similar situations are handled for other districts, potentially prompting more requests for waivers if exceptional circumstances arise.

Justification

Due to the combination of a ministerial error on behalf of school district staff and a number of severe weather related closures, the Fallsburg Central School District was in session for only 179 days for the 2016-2017 school year.
