What's happening
This bill lowers the minimum required number of overnight rooms at a Canandaigua resort for a liquor license exemption from 120 to 75.
Why it matters
Expanding eligibility for liquor license exemptions. By lowering the minimum room requirement, the bill allows smaller resorts in Canandaigua (with at least 75 rooms, down from 120) to qualify for an exemption from typical restrictions on shared interests between alcohol manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers—potentially making it easier for these businesses to operate.
Encouraging local economic development. The change could incentivize the creation or expansion of mid-sized resorts, which may not have been financially viable under the previous, higher threshold, thus supporting job creation and tourism in the area.
Leveling the playing field for hospitality businesses. The amendment allows more resorts to benefit from the same legal advantages previously reserved for larger establishments, potentially increasing competition and consumer choice in Canandaigua’s hospitality sector.
