What's happening
This bill exempts eligible veterans from paying application fees for admission to any New York state university.
Why it matters
Removes a financial barrier for veterans. By waiving application fees, the bill makes it easier for veterans to apply to New York state universities, potentially increasing their access to higher education.
Signals recognition of veterans' service. The exemption acknowledges the sacrifices made by veterans and aims to support their transition into civilian life through education.
May encourage more veterans to pursue or complete degrees. Eliminating upfront application costs could motivate veterans who might otherwise be deterred by financial concerns to consider higher education options.
Could increase veteran enrollment in state universities. With easier access and less financial strain at the application stage, New York state universities may see a rise in veteran students, enriching campus diversity and experience.
