What's happening
This bill exempts computer hardware, software, and school supplies from sales tax during two specified one-week periods each year.
Why it matters
Reduces financial barriers for students and families. By exempting computer hardware, software, and school supplies from sales tax during key back-to-school and mid-winter periods, the bill aims to make essential educational tools more affordable, potentially easing the financial burden on households preparing for school.
Promotes digital literacy and technology access. Including computer hardware and software in the exemption recognizes the growing importance of technology in education, helping more students and teachers access up-to-date devices and programs needed for learning and teaching.
Targets consumer behavior with time-limited incentives. By setting specific one-week windows for the tax exemption, the bill encourages shoppers to concentrate their purchases during these periods, which could boost local retail activity and help families better plan their budgets for educational expenses.

Justification
It is clear that New York families are struggling under the increased burden of high taxes in the state. While parents are struggling to pay the bills every month, the Legislature has an obligation to ensure that parents and their children have access to the school supplies necessary in order for the future leaders of the state to be successful.
