What's happening

This bill prohibits vivisection at New York colleges and universities when a scientifically and educationally satisfactory alternative exists.

Why it matters

  1. Encourages the adoption of modern, humane teaching methods. by requiring colleges and universities to use alternatives to vivisection when such methods are considered scientifically and educationally satisfactory, promoting innovation in science education.

  2. Aligns educational practices with broader ethical standards. by limiting harmful procedures on living organisms, potentially reflecting evolving public attitudes on animal welfare and student concerns about participation in animal surgeries.

  3. Creates a standardized benchmark for alternatives. by defining “scientifically and educationally satisfactory” as methods used by most peer institutions, which may drive schools to keep pace with national best practices and reduce unnecessary animal use.
