What's happening
This bill raises NYC’s bicycle-lane parking penalty cap and adds a $30 surcharge statewide.
Why it matters
Higher NYC ceiling. The bill would allow penalties of up to $150 for parking in a bicycle lane, rather than the existing $50 or $100 limits.
Statewide surcharge. Drivers found liable or convicted of parking, stopping or standing in bicycle lanes would owe an additional $30, on top of other penalties and surcharges.
Revenue destination. Collections outside NYC would go to the county’s chief fiscal officer; NYC collections would fund the city transportation department’s bicycle safety outreach program.
