What's happening
This bill requires the Board of Regents to set standards for issuing high school diplomas to homeschooled students, ensuring they are fully recognized.
Why it matters
Creates a clear, statewide standard for homeschooling diplomas. By mandating the Board of Regents to set standards, the bill aims to end inconsistencies in how homeschooled students' education is recognized, which can currently vary by district or institution.
Guarantees equal recognition for homeschooled students. Diplomas issued under this law must be fully accepted by all licensed and accredited colleges and universities in New York, leveling the playing field for homeschool graduates applying to higher education.
Reduces barriers to college and career opportunities. With homeschool diplomas officially equated to traditional diplomas, students are less likely to face skepticism or additional hurdles from employers, military recruiters, or licensing boards who require proof of high school completion.
Highlights state oversight of homeschooling outcomes. The act places responsibility on the Board of Regents, signaling increased state involvement in verifying that homeschool education meets established standards, potentially impacting how families structure homeschool curricula.
