What's happening

This bill requires the NYC Department of Buildings to keep records and post information online about all construction site incidents resulting in fatalities, even if no public safety threat existed.

Why it matters

  1. Increases transparency and public awareness. by requiring the NYC Department of Buildings to record and publish all construction site fatalities, even if no public safety threat or code violation was involved. This moves beyond just reporting incidents that posed a risk to the public.

  2. Ensures accountability. for construction site deaths by mandating official records for every fatal incident, regardless of cause or whether emergency response was triggered, potentially leading to better oversight and safer practices in the construction industry.

  3. Provides a comprehensive public database. of construction fatalities, allowing researchers, advocates, and policymakers to identify trends and systemic safety issues that may otherwise be overlooked if only publicly threatening incidents were reported.

  4. May influence future safety regulations and labor protections. by making comprehensive fatality data available, giving worker safety advocates and legislators more robust evidence to push for reforms.
