What's happening

This bill ensures that school districts cannot be charged more than their own costs when paying for health services for resident children attending nonpublic schools in other districts.

Why it matters

  1. Limits financial liability for school districts. by ensuring that a district only pays for health services for its resident children at the same rate it pays for its own students, preventing unexpected or inflated costs from other districts.

  2. Promotes equitable access to health services. for nonpublic school students, ensuring they receive the same level of care as public school students from their home district, regardless of where they attend school.

  3. Encourages clearer and fairer contracts between districts. by specifying that the cost should not exceed what the district pays for its own children, potentially reducing disputes and administrative burdens related to cross-district service billing.

Who cares

  • School districts with residents attending nonpublic schools elsewhere

The bill would cap their contracted payments for those students’ health and welfare services at no more than the amount paid by the district of residence.

  • School districts hosting nonpublic schools

The bill would limit the compensation they could negotiate with students’ home districts for providing health and welfare services.

  • Nonpublic schools and families of out-of-district students

The bill would change payment terms for the interdistrict contracts used to provide those students with health and welfare services.
