What's happening
This bill sets new emissions performance standards for outdoor wood boilers in New York, effective June 2024.
Why it matters
Establishes strict emissions limits for outdoor wood boilers,. which could reduce air pollution and improve public health—especially in rural or suburban areas where these devices are common.
Aligns state certification and labeling requirements with federal EPA standards,. ensuring only boilers that meet rigorous national criteria for emissions and efficiency can legally operate after June 2024.
Expands the legal definition of outdoor wood boilers,. clarifying that it covers any fuel-burning device designed for outdoor installation to heat buildings or water, which may close loopholes and prevent circumvention of the new rules.
Allows for immediate regulatory action,. meaning state agencies can quickly implement, amend, or repeal rules necessary to enforce these standards, accelerating the law’s practical impact.
