What's happening

This bill exempts licensed private investigators, armed security guards, and armored car guards from certain weapons possession laws while on duty, provided they meet training requirements.

Why it matters

  1. Expands legal authority for certain security professionals. to possess and carry large capacity ammunition feeding devices and specific impact weapons (like batons or billy clubs) while on duty, provided they are licensed and have completed designated training—potentially improving their ability to respond to dangerous situations.

  2. Requires additional training and oversight. , as the exemption only applies if private investigators, armed security guards, and armored car guards complete a state-approved firearms course and any other training prescribed by the superintendent of state police, aiming to ensure responsible and lawful use.

  3. Limits the exemption to professional activities. , meaning these individuals are only covered while performing official duties or traveling directly to and from work, which helps balance public safety concerns with the needs of security personnel.

  4. May impact the private security industry. , potentially making it easier for employers to provide armed protection services and for employees to carry the tools necessary for their jobs, while still maintaining state control over who can possess these weapons and under what circumstances.
