What's happening

This bill creates a tax credit for active duty U.S. armed forces members for hunting and fishing license fees in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Direct financial relief for active duty service members. By refunding hunting and fishing license costs through a tax credit, the bill reduces out-of-pocket expenses for military families and acknowledges their service with a tangible benefit.

  2. Encourages outdoor recreation and well-being. Making licenses more affordable may increase participation in hunting and fishing among service members, fostering recreation, stress relief, and connection to New York’s natural resources.

  3. Potential impact on state conservation funding. Since license fees often support wildlife management and conservation programs, shifting this cost to a tax credit could affect how those initiatives are funded, possibly requiring adjustments to maintain conservation efforts.
