What's happening
This bill establishes a grant program to fund training and resources for sexual assault forensic examiners across New York State.
Why it matters
Expanding Statewide Access. By creating a centralized grant program, the bill aims to ensure sexual assault victims across New York—regardless of location—have more consistent access to trained forensic examiners, which can be crucial for evidence collection and victim support.
Addressing Resource Gaps. The program is specifically targeted to areas or institutions that can demonstrate a need, directing resources and training where there are shortages of qualified sexual assault forensic examiners.
Supporting Victims’ Legal Outcomes. Well-trained forensic examiners play a critical role in collecting evidence that can be used in prosecutions, meaning this bill could improve the quality of investigations and the likelihood of justice for survivors.
Interagency Collaboration. The bill requires the Department of Health to work with the Crime Victims Board, reflecting a coordinated approach to addressing sexual assault response and victim services at the state level.
