What's happening
This bill increases the required notice period from 15 to 30 days for hearings on liquor license applications near existing establishments.
Why it matters
Gives local governments and community boards more time to review and respond to new liquor license applications near existing bars/restaurants, potentially allowing for greater neighborhood input and public participation in the process.
Could increase transparency and scrutiny around the concentration of liquor-licensed establishments, helping communities better assess possible impacts such as noise, public safety, and neighborhood character before licenses are granted.
May slow down the approval process for new businesses seeking liquor licenses in densely licensed areas, potentially affecting business planning and timelines, but also giving more opportunity for compromise or mitigation of concerns.
Applies to pending and future applications, so could immediately affect applicants already in process, requiring them to meet the new, longer notice period and potentially revisit their community engagement efforts.
