What's happening

This bill allows New York taxpayers to donate to a new fund supporting affordable housing for veterans and seniors via their tax return.

Why it matters

  1. Gives New Yorkers a direct way to support affordable housing for veterans and seniors through voluntary donations, potentially increasing funding for these vulnerable groups without raising taxes.

  2. Creates transparency and accountability by requiring annual public reports on how donated funds are used, including detailed breakdowns of recipients, amounts granted, and the purposes of the expenditures.

  3. Designates the New York State Director of Veterans’ Affairs as a key administrator for the fund, ensuring that funds are managed by an office with expertise in veterans’ issues and needs.

  4. Mandates timely use of contributions within each fiscal year, aiming for rapid deployment of resources to address urgent housing needs among veterans and seniors.
