What's happening
This bill increases penalties by suspending the license for 60 days for repeat offenses of illegally passing a stopped school bus.
Why it matters
Targets Repeat Offenders. By imposing a 60-day license suspension for a second violation within 18 months, this bill specifically aims to deter those who repeatedly ignore school bus stop laws, rather than first-time offenders.
Focuses on Child Safety. The increased penalty underscores the seriousness of illegally passing stopped school buses, which is a significant risk to children boarding or exiting the bus.
Creates Clearer Consequences. The mandatory suspension provides an automatic and predictable consequence, likely leading to greater awareness and compliance among drivers.
Signals Legislative Priority. By amending the law to elevate penalties, the bill demonstrates that protecting children around school buses is a legislative priority, which might influence public attitudes and future enforcement efforts.
