What's happening
This bill requires the TASC exam and preparatory materials to be offered in Chinese and Korean for students with limited English proficiency.
Why it matters
Expands educational equity. By mandating TASC exam and prep materials in Chinese and Korean, the bill addresses barriers faced by students with limited English proficiency, potentially increasing their chances to earn high school equivalency diplomas.
Requires systemic changes in schools. School districts—including those in NYC—must provide translated courses, materials, and notifications, which could lead to broader changes in how schools support non-English speaking students.
Introduces new accountability measures. Schools must track and annually report the number of students taking the TASC in Chinese or Korean, potentially influencing future policy and resource allocation for language access.
Sets a precedent for language access in education. This legislation could pave the way for similar measures in other languages or states, reinforcing the importance of multilingual support in public education.
