What's happening

This bill requires New York's disaster preparedness plans to include arrangements for delivering medical supplies and medications during emergencies.

Why it matters

  1. Directly addresses a critical gap. By mandating specific arrangements for the delivery of medical supplies and medications during disasters, the bill targets a common failure point in emergency responses where healthcare facilities can run dangerously low on essential resources.

  2. Protects vulnerable populations. Ensuring continued access to medications and supplies for pharmacies, hospitals, and nursing homes is vital for safeguarding the health of those most at risk—such as the elderly, chronically ill, and those in institutional care—during emergencies.

  3. Promotes concrete planning and accountability. Requiring these logistics to be part of the official state disaster plan means there will be formalized protocols and clearer lines of responsibility, making it less likely that crucial deliveries are delayed or neglected during crises.
